In the late 1800’s, Benjamin Holt would build his first combine harvester and steam traction engine tractor, which would spur the creation of The Holt Manufacturing Company in 1892. Almost twenty years later, C.L. Best established the C.L. Best Gas Traction Co., which would go on to produce the Holt 75 Track-Type Tractor in 1912. By 1925, both companies would merge to form the Caterpillar Tractor Co., providing a line of five tractors and a dealer network to help its customers get their work done.

Since the Great Depression, Caterpillar has continually proven its commitment to its customers by bringing new solutions and innovation “to build, power, and connect the world.” One of its most notable product milestones includes introducing the first Caterpillar diesel engine, the D9900 or “Old Betsy” as some would call it, and incorporating it into the Cat Diesel Sixty Tractor in 1931. This engine would allow the company to expand from agriculture to the power industry, helping construction crews build unimaginable projects like the Golden Gate State Bridge.
